by bbrit project
Images of Black people on television today do not seem out of the ordinary. Shows such as East Enders and The Bill feature Black characters. And, there have even been all-Black productions such as the 1980’s Demond’s and the 1990’s Real McCoy and more recently, Queenie. Meanwhile, actors of African descent and actors such as Idris Elba and Michaela Coel are household names. And there are many new talents emerging.
But this has not always been the case. The journey of Black actors in British television has been one of perseverance and evolution, of overcoming challenges in securing roles that accurately reflected their experiences and talents.
The journey starts in the 1950s almost 30 years after the first television drama was broadcast on the BBC, with the groundbreaking docudrama, A Man From the Sun that focused on the experiences of the then 75,000 West Indians who had newly settled in Britain, and the disparity they found between the mythical country and the real one.
Explore the history of Black British television in this documentary which explores the rise of Black actors from the 1950s to today.
